After Buying A House

5 Things to Do After Buying A House

You’ve gone through the steps, you’ve signed all the paperwork, and you’re officially the owner of a new home! But… Now what? Apart from unpacking, decorating, and maybe buying some new things for your home, there are few things you should do after buying a house before you get settled in.

1. Set Up Utilities

You probably don’t want to live in a house without power, water, or internet. Setting up your utilities is one of the first things you should do upon closing on your new home. It might even be a good idea to call and make appointments for these things beforehand. This way, you won’t have to wait days or weeks to get these things set up in your new home.

2. Change Locks

If you’re moving into a house that someone else used to live in, it’s likely there are some extra keys floating around out there. To be safe, and ensure no one can enter into your home that’s not supposed to be there, it’s a good idea to change the locks once you move in. If you have a garage door with a code on the outside, you’ll want to change the code to that as well. When changing codes and locks, don’t forget to make a few spare keys, and write the code down so you don’t forget it.

3. Change Address & Forward Mail

This is one of the rather tedious parts of moving: changing your address. While you can and should have your mail forwarded from the post office, mail forwarding doesn’t last forever. Write down as many things as you can think of that have your old address, and cross them off your list as you get them updated. Moving.com has a great checklist of who to notify when you move. This ensures no important documents get lost in the mail.

4. Go Over Your Inspection

Before you bought your home, you had an inspection performed to note any issues with the house. It’s likely you couldn’t get the seller to fix everything on the inspection, so it’s good to keep the inspection on hand and gradually have things fixed as you settle in. If there are any issues you consider important, though, and couldn’t get them fixed by the seller, you may want to have those handled before doing much else inside your new home. Make a list of most important to least important repairs, create an achievable timeline of when you want them done, and go from there.

5. Have A Housewarming Party

Owning a home is a big accomplishment and a great start to a memorable journey. It’s important to celebrate as well! Have a housewarming party! Invite all your friends and family over to celebrate this momentous occasion with you. This is a great opportunity to get some new homely gifts, test out your hosting skills, and start making memories in your new home.
